Start from a skill to acquire, not just a place
Many candidates look for “an internship” without knowing what they want to learn from it. In Senegal as elsewhere, host organisations respond better to a precisely worded request: mastering accounting software, taking part in a building site, following a production line, running a professional social media account, assisting a sales team.
Before writing to anyone, note three skills you already have, two you want to acquire and the kind of tasks you would like to observe. This thinking will serve you equally well in the cover letter and in the interview.
The landscape of Senegalese players
Several bodies are involved, each with its own role:
- The national agency for the promotion of youth employment, which supports guidance, relays offers and training opportunities, and runs integration programmes.
- The fund financing vocational and technical training, whose windows support the training of company staff, individual requests and institutions, under conditions of their own.
- Universities and schools, which issue placement agreements and follow their students.
- Chambers of commerce and of trades and professional organisations, which know the companies and craftspeople of an area.
This map avoids a common confusion: a funding window is not an internship place, and a guidance agency does not replace the agreement from your institution.
The training internship and the placement agreement
A student enrolled at a university, a higher institute or a technical school goes through the internship office or the department to obtain the agreement. It states the identity of the parties, the period, the place, the tasks and the name of the supervisor. It is generally signed before the first day.
Without an agreement you risk an unclear status in the event of an accident, a dispute or a request for a certificate. It also prepares the assessment: the institution often expects a report, sometimes an oral defence, based on the tasks described at the outset. Ask for it early, because signature circuits can be slow in periods of high demand.
Apprenticeship, dual training and vocational training
The Senegalese system of vocational and technical training combines teaching in a centre with apprenticeship in the workplace. Traditional apprenticeship with a craftsperson remains very present in mechanics, carpentry, dressmaking, welding and catering. More structured schemes, sometimes supported by foreign partners, link a training centre and a company in a dual approach.
If a dual training offer is published, read the conditions methodically: age, level of education, required language, application deadlines, documents requested and place of training. Calls are often time-limited and may concern another country, which means a visa, housing and cost of living to plan for.
Funding: what it covers and what it does not
Training funding works through a mechanism separate from placement in a company. A fund may, depending on its windows, help a company train its employees, an individual follow a course, or an institution modernise its offer. It does not guarantee an internship and does not replace admission to the course.
To avoid unpleasant surprises, proceed in four stages: check your eligibility, confirm admission to the training, obtain the agreement of the host organisation, then assemble the funding file within the deadlines. Amounts and ceilings change: ask the relevant window directly rather than relying on a rumour or an old document.
Where and how to apply
- Platforms and announcements of the public bodies for youth employment.
- Internship offices and alumni associations of universities and schools.
- Companies in growth sectors: banking, telecommunications, energy, food processing, port logistics, tourism, digital.
- Neighbourhood workshops and small businesses, for manual and technical trades.
For an email application, write a clear subject line, for example “Accounting internship application, three months”, and a message of five lines at most. Mention the period, your institution and your availability. A single attachment, named with your own name, avoids cluttering the recipient’s inbox.
Candidates coming from abroad
A young person coming from another country must check the entry and residence rules according to their nationality. Citizens of the West African area benefit from a favourable movement regime, but other travellers need to look at the visa, the permitted length of stay and the nature of the activity. An invitation letter from the company, a placement agreement, health insurance and proof of accommodation are among the documents often requested. Dakar concentrates most companies and organisations, which affects the cost of housing and transport.
Illustration: a six-month logistics project
Imagine a transport and logistics student in Dakar, with a hypothetical budget of thirty thousand CFA francs a month for transport and meals. Here is a fictional scenario.
- Month one: he targets ten freight forwarders and handling companies, then asks two teachers for contacts.
- Month two: three interviews, one of which leads to an agreement for a two-month period.
- Month three: agreement signed, objectives written down: follow an import file, learn customs documentation, produce a tracking table.
- Months four and five: the internship, with a written check-in every week.
- Month six: review, report, request for a certificate and a reference.
The figures are arbitrary; what matters is the progression and the written record of each step.
Common faults
- Confusing training support with a promise of a place.
- Paying an intermediary who promises a guaranteed internship.
- Staying passive: without a clear assignment, the internship is reduced to observation.
- Forgetting the end-of-internship certificate and the supervisor’s contact details.
- Neglecting safety conditions on a building site, in a workshop or in an industrial area.
Before any decision, confirm with your institution and the host organisation the conditions that apply to you.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find an internship in Senegal as a student?
Begin with the internship office of your institution, then approach alumni and teachers. Next, target about fifteen companies in your field with a personalised application. Also check the announcements of the public youth employment bodies. Keep a record of what you send and follow up after a week.
Does training support entitle me to an internship?
No. Funding windows deal with covering training courses under their conditions, not with allocating places in companies. You need admission to the course, a host organisation and a complete funding file. Each step is checked separately with the relevant body.
Do I need a placement agreement?
For an internship linked to a course, yes, it is the safest rule. It sets out the tasks, the length, the supervisor and the framework for assessment. It protects the student and the company if difficulties arise. Do not start without having it signed by all parties.
Is apprenticeship reserved for manual trades?
No, but it is especially widespread in crafts and technical trades. Work-study courses also exist in fields such as management, maintenance or services, depending on the institutions and partners. Find out about the qualification aimed at and the contract before committing.
Is an internship paid in Senegal?
It depends on the company, the length and the agreement. Some organisations pay a transport allowance or a small payment, others do not. The amount is not always set uniformly: ask before signing and have it specified in writing.
Can a young foreigner come to train in Senegal?
Yes, provided they meet the entry and residence conditions, which depend on nationality. Prepare the agreement, an invitation letter, insurance and proof of housing. Ask the embassy or the competent authorities before booking your trip.
How can I make an internship useful for finding a job?
Set three measurable objectives from the start, ask for varied tasks and hold a regular check-in with your supervisor. At the end, request a certificate detailing your tasks and, if possible, a reference. Then keep in touch with the team, since an internship is often the first step into a network.
