Allowance, expenses and benefits: three ideas not to mix up
Many interns speak of “internship money” as one lump. Yet three mechanisms need to be told apart. The allowance (gratification in France) rewards your presence and the work you provide. Benefits in kind or in rights, such as the canteen or a partial contribution to a transport pass, reduce certain costs. Finally, the reimbursement of expenses incurred at the host’s request, for example a business trip, works on the basis of receipts.
This distinction is useful because it shapes the discussion with your supervisor. You do not negotiate an allowance above the minimum, access to the staff canteen or the refund of a train ticket for a trade fair in the same way. The internship agreement must list any benefits: meals, accommodation, reimbursement of expenses.
Remember the starting rule: what is not written down may not be owed. A verbal promise, however sincere, does not protect an intern.
The minimum allowance for an internship of more than two months
For an internship in a company or association in France, an allowance is compulsory when the presence exceeds two consecutive months, around 44 days at seven hours a day, within the same school or university year. For a discontinuous internship, the allowance becomes due from the 309th hour of the internship.
Under the rules applying in 2026, the minimum is 4.50 euros gross per hour of actual presence, and a collective agreement or accord may provide for more. It is paid each month, either according to actual hours or smoothed over the length of the internship. Below this hourly rate it is not subject to social security contributions.
These sums are not a reimbursement of expenses: they are first of all meant to pay for everyday life, including travel and meals. For a shorter internship, the host has no obligation to pay anything, although it may choose to.
Travel: partial reimbursement of a transport pass
An intern may have part of their public transport costs reimbursed, on the same terms as the host’s employees. For employees, the general rule is a partial contribution to the pass, around half its price, on production of receipts. The passes concerned are those for public transport or public bicycle-hire services.
You should, however, ask what applies in your case: a journey by your own car or by car-sharing does not open the same rights, and some companies add a flat-rate sum for sustainable ways of travelling. Interns whose placement lasts only a few weeks often buy single tickets, which are not always reimbursed.
When you sign, ask in writing to whom you should hand your receipts, how often and with what document: a copy of the pass, an invoice or a monthly statement. This avoids months of waiting to recover a modest but useful sum.
Meals: canteen, meal vouchers or a packed lunch at your own cost
The intern has access to the staff restaurant or to meal vouchers on the same terms as employees. The host does not always pay a sum in cash, but access to subsidised collective catering or a voucher card really changes the daily outlay.
If the host has neither a canteen nor vouchers, nothing obliges it to compensate you. It is then up to you to budget for one lunch per day on site, which you can limit by bringing your own meal or by choosing a university restaurant nearby where your institution’s rules allow it.
Also find out whether your internship involves meals taken while travelling, for example at a client’s site or during a seminar. These can be paid by the host as business expenses, on itemised receipts, and have nothing to do with the usual lunch.
Accommodation: no general right, everything is settled by agreement
No rule guarantees an intern housing or a housing allowance. Accommodation therefore depends on a written agreement with the host, on a local scheme or on your own means. Some companies, especially in hospitality, farming or large industrial groups, offer housing or a contribution, which is stated in the internship agreement.
When nothing is provided, several options exist depending on the length of stay. Youth hostels offer short stays, student discounts and sometimes good rates over long periods. Youth housing residences (habitat des jeunes) take in 16 to 30-year-olds who are training, working or on an internship, with a private room and shared spaces. University halls of residence may also let to interns outside term time.
Start looking as soon as the agreement is signed: in busy cities, rooms available for a few months run out very quickly in September and in spring.
France Travail’s mobility aid: a special case
There is a mobility aid that concerns certain courses taken with France Travail, meant to cover travel and accommodation costs when the place of training is far from home. It does not apply to every internship: only defined situations and pathways qualify.
If you are a jobseeker and your internship is part of a training action, check with your adviser whether you meet the conditions of distance, status and timing. A student internship under an agreement with a higher education institution follows a different logic, unrelated to this aid.
In any case, do not book anything until you have written confirmation that the aid is agreed, and respect the deadlines for submitting receipts so as not to lose the benefit.
A sample monthly budget, with round figures
Imagine, purely for illustration, a four-month internship 25 kilometres from home. The monthly transport pass costs 90 euros and the host reimburses half, or 45 euros: the net cost falls to 45 euros. Lunches cost 8 euros a day for twenty days, or 160 euros; if a canteen at 4 euros is available, the outlay drops to 80 euros.
If the intern has to rent a room at 450 euros a month in the town of the internship, that rent is added to the usual outgoings. In this hypothetical scenario, spending comes to 575 euros a month: 45 for transport, 80 for meals and 450 for housing.
Compare this total with the monthly allowance you expect. If the gap is negative, see what can be renegotiated or funded elsewhere: regional support, a contribution from your institution, family help or a shifted internship period.
How to ask for reimbursement without creating tension
Choose the right moment: the signing of the agreement, rather than the middle of the internship, to ask about expenses. Put the questions simply: which costs are covered, on what documents and how often.
Systematically keep tickets, invoices, statements and approval emails. An expense incurred on the host’s behalf without prior agreement is not necessarily reimbursed; ask beforehand, in writing, even with a short message.
If a point in the agreement seems unclear, approach your institution’s internship office before signing rather than afterwards. The ministry’s guide to the student internship helps you prepare the mutual commitments on practical costs. A polite, precise and documented request is rarely badly received by a supervisor.
Frequently asked questions
Does the company have to reimburse my transport pass?
An intern may have part of their public transport costs covered, on the same terms as employees. The rate and the documents required depend on the host. Ask for them in writing at the start of the internship and hand in your receipts every month.
Am I entitled to meal vouchers or the canteen as an intern?
Yes, the intern has access to the staff restaurant or meal vouchers on the same terms as employees. If the host offers none to its staff, it does not have to create a benefit for you. Check what exists before estimating your meal budget.
Who pays for my housing during an internship?
Unless there is a written agreement, nobody is obliged to. Some hosts offer housing or a contribution, stated in the internship agreement. Otherwise you need to look at youth hostels, youth housing residences, a shared flat or university halls, depending on the length of stay and the town.
Is an allowance compulsory for every internship?
No. It is due when the presence exceeds two consecutive months or 309 hours in the year, with a minimum of 4.50 euros gross per hour under the rules applying in 2026. Below that, the host may pay a sum without being obliged to. The agreement must state the amount.
Can I get France Travail’s mobility aid for my internship?
Only in the cases provided for: certain courses taken with France Travail, subject to conditions of situation and distance. A student internship under an agreement comes under other rules. Contact your adviser before incurring costs, to check your eligibility and the receipts to collect.
What if the host refuses to reimburse costs promised verbally?
Politely recall the conversation in an email, then ask your institution’s internship office, which can step in. Without anything in writing, proof is hard. In future, have any planned reimbursement, however small, mentioned in the agreement or in an addendum.
Are the costs of a business trip during the internship covered?
If the host sends you on a trip for its own business, the costs incurred are in principle reimbursed on receipts, as for an employee. Ask about the approval process before booking, and do not pay personally without your supervisor’s written agreement.
