The problem the RFF is meant to solve
A long course can last longer than the jobseeker’s allowance for training that a person is entitled to. Take a fifteen-month programme with ten months of entitlement left: that leaves five months with no income, just when you are preparing for the final exam and the work placement with an employer. The end-of-training payment, known in France as the RFF (rémunération de fin de formation), was designed to fill precisely this kind of gap.
It is not a general extension of unemployment benefit. It is a bridge granted to certain people, for certain courses, until the planned end of the programme. The rest of this page explains what sets it apart from a simple continuation of your existing entitlement.
Who can claim it
According to France Travail, the French public employment service, the RFF is meant for registered jobseekers whose entitlement to the training allowance, the training version of the job-security allowance or the training version of the transition allowance runs out before the course finishes. People whose benefits are paid by a public-sector employer are also mentioned.
Several conditions must be met at the same time:
- The course appears in your personalised jobseeker agreement, or in the job-security plan if you are on the job-security contract.
- It is funded or co-funded by France Travail, a regional council, Agefiph, a skills operator, another public authority or, for the job-security contract, the employer.
- It leads to a qualification recognised through a vocational diploma or title.
- It prepares for an occupation in short supply, according to the list drawn up by France Travail.
That last condition often comes as a surprise: a good course aimed at a job that is not on the shortage list may not open the door to the RFF.
Amount, cap and length of payment
The RFF takes over the last daily amount of the allowance you were receiving when your entitlement ended, up to a monthly ceiling that is revised from time to time. On the France Travail page we consulted, that ceiling was around 770 euros a month; the figure that applies on your dates may have changed, which is why it pays to read your notification letter.
Payment starts the day after your entitlement ends and stops when the course ends. The combined total of the training allowance and the RFF is limited to three years for a single course.
If your allowance was higher than the ceiling, the RFF therefore means a drop in income. Build that into your budget before choosing between a long course and a shorter route.
Social security and tax treatment
The RFF is not subject to the CSG or CRDS social charges. Your social cover is the same as it was while you received the training allowance: health, maternity, disability, death and basic state pension. France Travail pays the contributions, so nothing is deducted from the gross amount.
Periods on the RFF do not count towards the supplementary (complementary) pension. If you are close to retirement, weigh this detail up before committing to a course lasting several months.
From timetable to notification: how the claim works
There is no separate application form. Eligibility is checked automatically when the training provider sends its enrolment certificate to France Travail. Before that, your adviser can look at your likely income with you.
Two outcomes are then possible:
- You are eligible: the start date appears in the letter confirming your registration on the course.
- You are not eligible: you receive a letter of non-eligibility with a reply slip, and your enrolment only becomes final once you confirm it; the course is then taken without any pay.
The sensible approach is to ask for this assessment before you sign, stating the expected end date of your entitlement and the end date of the course.
A worked example to see the gap
Consider, purely as an illustration, Yanis, who enrols on a fourteen-month course to become a maintenance technician. His training allowance, assumed here to be 28 euros a day, is due to stop after eight months. Over those eight months he receives around 840 euros a month.
From the ninth month the RFF ceiling, assumed to be 770 euros, becomes the limit: his income falls to 770 euros for six months. The drop is modest (70 euros a month, or 420 euros over the period), but rent and a loan repayment weigh more heavily in the final months. So Yanis asks his training centre when the final exam falls and whether the work placements can be grouped together.
The figures are arbitrary: only the France Travail notification applies to your own case.
Attendance, monthly updates and reporting changes
The RFF depends on you attending throughout the course. Unjustified absences, dropping out and placement periods that were not part of the agreed programme can change or stop the payments.
The monthly update of your situation on the France Travail website or in its app remains compulsory. If the timetable changes, for example because a placement is extended, an exam is postponed or a resit session is added, tell both the centre and your adviser in writing: the period covered is calculated from the dates you have declared.
What can block the bridge
- A course that is not listed in your jobseeker agreement or was added afterwards.
- Funding that does not come from one of the accepted funders.
- An occupation missing from the shortage list on the date you start.
- A course with no diploma or vocational title at the end.
- A timetable that goes beyond the three-year cumulative limit.
- Monthly updates missed for several months.
When one of these points is a problem, ask whether another funder, a different course for the same occupation or a different spread of the programme would keep you within the conditions.
Other options if the RFF does not apply
Depending on your circumstances, other sources of income may be worth considering: a work-study contract if your age and plans allow it, part-time work that fits around class hours, a claim for the RSA minimum income benefit, regional support, or the trainee pay for vocational training if the course is officially approved. An employee preparing a career change can also look into a career-transition project with salary maintained.
A conversation with a career-guidance adviser lets you compare these options against the real length of the course and your household’s outgoings.
Frequently asked questions
Does the RFF automatically extend my unemployment entitlement?
No. It is a bridge granted under conditions: the course must be in your jobseeker agreement, paid for by an accepted funder, lead to a qualification and prepare for an occupation in short supply. If a single condition is missing, you are left without income once your entitlement ends. Have your file checked before you start.
How much is the RFF?
It repeats the last daily amount of your training allowance, up to a monthly ceiling. On the page we consulted, the ceiling was about 770 euros a month, and it is revised from time to time. The exact amount and the start date are shown in the notification sent by France Travail.
Do I need to submit a specific application for the RFF?
No extra step is planned: eligibility is checked automatically when the centre sends in your enrolment certificate. It is still wise to ask your adviser for an assessment beforehand, giving the date your entitlement ends and the date the course finishes.
How long can the RFF last?
It begins when the training allowance ends and finishes when the course ends. The training allowance and the RFF together cannot exceed three years for the same course. Any lengthening of the timetable should be reported, because the period covered rests on the dates you have declared.
Does the RFF count towards my pension?
It gives the same social cover as the training allowance, including the basic state pension, and France Travail pays the contributions. However, periods on the RFF are not credited towards the supplementary pension. It is worth measuring that difference if you are approaching retirement age.
What should I do if I receive a non-eligibility letter?
Read the reply slip carefully: your enrolment only becomes final once you confirm it, and the course will then be unpaid. Before replying, ask your adviser whether another funder, a similar course for an in-demand occupation or a different start date is possible.
